Ambergris Caye Belize

Ambergris Caye (pronounced Am-BUR-gris or Am-BUR-grease Key) located in the beautiful clear waters of the Caribbean Sea just off the southern tip of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The island itself is 25 miles long and a little over a mile wide in some places, the largest of some 200 cayes that dot the coastline of Belize.
For a great bird’s-eye view of the colorful coastline and the reef, we recommend grabbing a window seat on the 20-minute puddle jumper from Belize City; we can arrange your travel on either Tropic Air or Maya Air. The view is stunning and if you look carefully you are bound to spot some marine life.
Ambergris Caye is protected by the Barrier Reef, which runs the entire length of Belize, 190 miles. It is the second largest living coral reef in the world.
The reef lies only a quarter mile from the shore and offers spectacular reef and deep-sea fishing, sailing, snorkeling and diving. One of the most popular snorkeling and dive sites are the world famous Hol Chan Marine Reserve, which is only a short boat ride, you can be picked up right at our dock for your underwater adventure.
Our Grand Caribe concierge staff works with preferred dive shops in town. We can help you arrange scuba diving training and certification, trips to the different snorkel and dive sites, including the Great Blue Hole and many of the secluded cayes that offer spectacular diving and snorkeling. This area was once studied by well-known ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau. Contact us at tours@grandcaribebelize.com for more information.
San Pedro Town, our delightful little village on Ambergris Caye, is the largest inhabited area on the island. Its atmosphere is full of life and the cobble stone streets give it an old world charm. The town started as a quiet little fishing town and has now grown to Belize’s prime tourist destination. Many Belize bound tourists fly straight to San Pedro and use it as their base for excursions to the Mayan Ruins, the Belize Zoo or the many jungle adventures on the mainland.
For a small island there is no shortage of things to do in the evening; restaurants and cocktail lounges offer special nights; many offer great live music, fine dining by the sea and of course the famous ‘chicken drop’ on Thursdays. Our friendly reservations or tours staff can provide you with information on what to do, what to see and when it’s happening. They will be more than happy to help you fill in your social events calendar.
If you are looking for a relaxed seaside vacation, a bit off the beaten path but not too far, Ambergris Caye is the place. The island offers you friendly people, amazing adventures, beautiful turquoise waters and white sandy beaches. It has most of the modern conveniences without global fast food and hotel chains. And best of all, the seafood is fresh, rum is plentiful and Belikin beers are cold.
