Belize is being discovered as an amazing spot for destination engagements and weddings. Ambergris Caye, Belize’s largest island, is popping up on more and more travel lists as an up-and-coming hot spot for vacation AND for love.
With the beach, gorgeous blue water, the reef, fantastic bars and restaurants and the long list of adventures – from snorkeling to touring Maya sites – it’s the perfect place to keep your wedding party, big or small, busy and happy.
And have an absolutely gorgeous wedding.
A few months ago, our blog featured gorgeous photos of some of the recent weddings at Grand Caribe Resort...and just a few days ago something exciting happened…and we wanted to share.
Two full time residents of Grand Caribe got engaged. In truly spectacular style.
But let me take a few steps back…
This awesome picture has a great story behind it. And Larry (our groom-to-be) was kind enough to fill us in – on how they met, how they came to live at Grand Caribe and this very cool engagement.
From Larry: I met Margo in our hometown of Akron, Ohio years ago…and we were friends. I then had the chance to spend 8 months living and working on Ambergris Caye in 2010 and loved it. My roommate during that time, A.C., also got engaged on Ambergris Caye a few years ago. (See that amazing video).
I returned to Akron and Margo and I soon started dating. I brought up the idea of moving to Belize but she just couldn’t picture living outside the US.
That started to change when took a cruise to Belize (among other places) and Margo saw the crystal clear waters on our excursion.
A year later we visited Ambergris Caye for a two week vacation – and she was hooked. She started asking ME if we could move here. We saved for a year, started looking for a place to live on the caye and selling our things.
I knew the area I wanted to live in…but we couldn’t find a small house for the right price…or the right location. A condo became available at Grand Caribe and after looking at the website, we were totally sold. The location, the pools, the restaurant, the great internet…we jumped on it immediately and it was one of the best choices we’ve ever made.
I have been plotting the proposal for a while. I asked Margo about rings months ago…just wondering…and she showed me a very unique, beautiful design on Etsy.com. We looked at other rings on other websites but it always came back to that ring. I ended up getting it custom designed for her.
All week I hinted that the resort would be taking aerial photos for their own website and that I had scored us a free helicopter ride with Astrum Helicopters. I even had the owner and staff of Grand Caribe casually mention it…she didn’t suspect for a second.
And…after a morning of errors and almost misses…
We could not be happier. And our dog, Guy, is too.
Yes…his name is Guy.
Do we plan to get married at Grand Caribe?
We would both love to. We’ve watched weddings out our front window and the beach scenes are exactly what we want for our own ceremony. Now we just need to see if we can convince all of our family and friends to come down for it.
We are now in Akron sharing the news with them and maybe…just maybe…we can convince them all to come celebrate with us in our new home of Ambergris Caye.
