Having started in 2007 and scheduled to coincide with the opening of Belize Lobster season, San Pedro Lobsterfest has grown bigger and better every year. With ongoing publicity in local media, Belize message boards and “What’s on When” the world event guide by Frommers, it is no surprise that this seafood festival has been making people travel lists.
The San Pedro Business Association made a few new additions to this year’s festival, with the Lobster Crawl and the official after party. Lobsterfest Crawl passports were handed out and as people attended the week long schedule of events, they collected stamps with each stamp giving them a ticket for a chance to win the Grand Prize below which was drawn at the block party.
Grand Prize for San Pedro 2013 Lobsterfest: Tropic Air tickets from Belize City to San Pedro and a three night double occupancy at Banana Beach and all kinds of other including food drinks and tours. Congratulations go out to Lori Wasinger Betz, a Grand Caribe native, for winning the Lobster Crawl grand prize.
The annual kick off Cocktail Party is traditionally held at El Divino Restaurant, located at our sister resort Banana Beach Resort. As always, it was a big hit with locals and tourists alike featuring opening ceremonies, great food, live music and a whole lot of fun. The coconut lobster appetizer was a big hit as were the main courses of lobster a la orange and beef tenderloin stuffed with lobster. This is always a ‘must do’ event, and a great way to kick off Lobster Season in Belize.
The San Pedro Lobsterfest Block Party has always been the highlight of the week long festivities and this year topped the chart. Booths lining Front Street were serving up dishes made with freshly caught delicious Caribbean spiny lobster. Many also served creative lobster or Caribbean themed drinks including lobster vodka wasabi shots and the ever popular stingray, made with limoncello and cranberry juice.
As always the entertainment lineup was great. Panerrifix Steel drum band hailing from Our Lady o Guadalupe RC School in Belmopan filled the air with melodic tropical sounds. San Pedro’s Gino and the Shack Shakers had the crowd up and dancing to familiar rock and roll tunes. Later in the evening Belize’s well-known Garifuna Collective filled the park with Belizean music, a perfect cultural ending to a great night.
We were pleased to host the official after party this year with Lobstermania Pool Party at Cowboy’s Pool Bar and Grill, and it gained ‘Pool Party of the Year status’. We could not think of a better way to end Lobsterfest.
Wanting to make it an extra fun day, Cowboy Doug filled the pool with floats for party goers to enjoy, held a swimsuit competition and pool relay races. He also added unique twist by doing an interactive facebook giveaway day, where people won prizes by looking onto his page and completing challenges.
Fresh on the grill were lobster tails, Belize beef and delicious ribs, lobster dogs were also available. Double trouble happy hour was happening all day long with two for one on local rum, house wine and Belikin Beer.
In addition to all the fun stuff mentioned above, Oceana was there doing membership sign up at the party. We were excited to have them at the party to communicate the importance of and share their passion and pride in our reef system.
